This will not do at Gyankriti – यह सब नहीं ‘चलेगा’ ज्ञानकृति में

Today, 15th November, is the birth anniversary of Gijubhai Badheka. Gijubhai is an inspiration behind Gyankriti’s education philosophy. It is compulsory for all the educator joining Gyankriti to read the book ‘Diwaswapna’ by Gijubhai. We have multiple copies available in our library. Many of our parents also read and appreciate it. Order the book no. A001 or A002 from our library if you haven’t read it yet.

Another of his book “prathamikshaalam shikshak” has also encouraged us to frame our policies in such a way that Gyankriti is most loving place for children. Many parents or adults can think that we are not a hi-fi school but that is not something we want to do. Real education does not depend on how much resources or infrastructure you have. A Gurukul like Gyankriti can provide best of education within the limited resources we have. We have made of collection of some things that will not do at gyankriti from the excerpts of the book.

  • चलेगा कि हमारे स्कूल में शिक्षा पर पुस्तकों का एक विशाल पुस्तकालय नहीं है। नहीं चलेगा कि कोई भी व्यक्ति शिक्षा से संबंधित विषयों पर कोई भी किताब पढ़ नहीं सके।
  • चलेगा कि हमारी स्कूल की इमारत फैंसी पत्थरों या टाइलों से सजी न हो। नहीं चलेगा कि मैदान में गड्ढे हैं या उसकी दीवारों पर कीचड़ और गोबर के दाग-धब्बे नहीं हो।
  • चलेगा कि दीवारों पर रंग ना पुता हो। नहीं चलेगा कि कोनों में धूलऔर मकड़ी के जाले हो।
  • चलेगा कि फर्श पर कालीन नहीं है। नहीं चलेगा कि फर्श पर कूड़े और गंदगी फैलाई जाती हो।
  • चलेगा कि  फैंसी उपकरणों से भरी एक प्रयोगशाला नहीं है। नहीं चलेगा कि उपलब्ध छोटे उपकरणों का इस्तेमाल कभी नहीं किया जाता है।
  • चलेगा कि बड़ा पुस्तकालय नहीं है। नहीं चलेगा कि बच्चों को पसंद आने वाली कुछ किताबें न हों।
  • चलेगा कि हम महान विद्वान नहीं हैं। नहीं चलेगा कि हम अपने बच्चों को सम्मानऔर सम्मान देने वाला वातावरण नहीं दे सकते हैं।
  • चलेगा कि हम लगातार बच्चों के ‘अध्यापन’  में न लगे हों। नहीं चलेगा कि हम उनकी गतिविधियों में हस्तक्षेप करते हो , उन्हें धमकाते हो या अध्ययन हेतु बैठने के लिए मजबूर करते हैं।
  • चलेगा कि हमारे विद्यालय में बच्चे कुछ समय का अध्ययन करें और थोड़ी देर खेलें। नहीं चलेगा कि वे सख्त पर्यवेक्षण के तहत श्रमिकों जैसे दिन भर काम करते रहे।
  • चलेगा कि हमारे स्कूल के बच्चे हमसे मित्रों की तरह गले ना मिले। नहीं चलेगा कि वे हमे देखकर दूर भागे या हमसे डरते हैं।
  • चलेगा कि हमारे बच्चे एक जगह बैठे, पढ़े या चित्र बनाए, क्योंकि उन्हें ऐसा करना पसंद है। नहीं चलेगा कि वे किसी बाहरी व्यक्ति को प्रभावित करने के लिए कोई चित्रकारी करें या गाना गाए।
  • चलेगा कि हमारे बच्चे थोड़ा कम या थोड़ा धीमा सीखते हैं। नहीं चलेगा कि उन पर पढाई करने के लिए चिल्लाया जाता हो, ताकि वे तंग आकर आलसी बन जाये।
  • चलेगा कि बच्चे हमें बताएं कि उन्हें कुछ समझ नहीं आ रहा है, या फिर धीरे-धीरे  बाद में समझ आये। नहीं चलेगा कि सज़ा के डर से जल्दबाजी में आधा-अधूरा सीखे।
  • It will do if our school does not have a vast library of books on education. It will not do if no one reads a single book on education related topics.
  • It will do if our school building isn’t clad with fancy stones or tiles. It will not do if there are potholes in the ground, or if its walls are not clad with mud and dung.
  • It will do if the walls are not covered with paint. It will not do if there is dust and cobwebs in corners.
  • It will do if the floors are not covered by carpets. It will not do if there is litter and dirt strewed on them.
  • It will do if there is not a laboratory full of fancy equipment. It will not do if the little equipment that is available is not everused.
  • It will do if there is not a great big library. It will not do if there are not at least a few books that children would enjoy reading.
  • It will do if we are not great scholars. It will not do if we cannot give our children due respect, and an environment that encourages their development.
  • It will do if we are not constantly engaged in ‘teaching’ children. It will not do if we interfere in their activities, or threaten or force them to sit down to study.
  • It will do if the children in our school study a while and play a while. It will not do if they toil through the day like labourers under our strict supervision.
  • It will do if the children of our school do not cling to us like friends. It will not do if they run at the sight of us, or are afraid of us.
  • It will do if our children sit, read or draw because they feel like doing so. It will not do if they paint a picture or sing a song to impress an outsider.
  • It will do if our children learn a little less, or a little slower. It will not do if they are screamed at to study, so that they get fed up and become lethargic.
  • It will do if children tell us that they did not understand something, or do it slowly, at a later stage. It will not do if they rush through it under duress of punishment.

Community cooking session by parent

cooking is fun!

Today we had community cooking in Junior School. One of our parent Mrs. Kirti Agrawal (Mother of Dhriti Agrawal – Grade one) conducted this session. Students and educators helped her in preparing corn bhel. Students learned many new things like the peeling of boiled corn, boiled potatoes, coriander and chopping of vegetables followed by the mixing of spices in proper proportion to give it yummy taste. Later they enjoyed eating tasty corn bhel. They were extremely excited after eating corn bhel made by them.  We want to thank Mrs. Agrawal for coming up with such a great idea and making it a delightful day for the children.


Hereby, we invite all the parents from our parent community to take part in community cooking at Gyankriti. If you are interested kindly drop us an email. We will discuss the process in detail with you.

Please note: Parents can also take variety of sessions for students ranging from Art workshop to sports, educational trips to showcasing their literary works, story writing session to puppet show. It can be anything which can give exposure to our students outside the regular classroom setup.

Launch of Philately Club at Gyankriti

Philately is the study of stamps and postal history and other related items. It also refers to the collection, appreciation and research activities on stamps and other philatelic products. Junior School students visited the Indore GPO and met the in-charge of philatelic bureau, Ms. Kamla Khatwani. She showed us various stamps in the collection of GPO and formally announced the launch of Gyankriti’s Philatelic Club. We will dedicate an entire wall at Gyankriti for showcasing the stamps issued by post office, in the hope that it will be an excellent way for students to learn about historical events.

We also gifted each student a specially printed stamp with Gyankriti logo and an envelope. They will use it to complete a homework assignment where they are supposed to send a letter to any of their friends or relatives.

It is also possible to develop philately as a hobby for your children. It is a very easy and simple process. You just need to open a ‘philatelic-deposit-account’ at the GPO and they will send you a copy of all the latest stamps issued by the Dept. of posts.

Giving world class learning opportunities to Gyankriti students – Learning from the latest education reforms in Singapore

About Education in Singapore: The education system in Singapore is consistently ranked as one of the highest in the world by the OECD. It is believed that this comes from the style of teaching that is implemented in Singapore. Teachers focus on making sure that each of their students thoroughly move through the syllabus before moving on. By doing this teachers in Singapore teach a much more narrow but deeper type of instruction. Singapore’s education system has been described as “world-leading” and in 2010 was among those picked out for commendation by the Conservative former UK Education Secretary Michael Gove. According to PISA, an influential worldwide study on educational systems, Singapore has the highest performance in international education and tops in global rankings.

New Education Reforms in Singapore:   Singapore’s Ministry of Education (MOE) announced on Sept. 28 that it will be removing class rankings for primary and secondary students starting next year. Schools in Singapore will also cut mid-year exams for several levels; Primary 1 and 2 pupils will not be graded.

Aside from abolishing the class and level rankings, MOE will remove the class and level mean, as well as the minimum and maximum marks students may get in their report cards next year, as reported by The Straits Times on Sept. 28. Underlining and/or coloring failing marks will also be removed from the report cards of the students.

For MOE Minister Ong Ye Kung, removing class rankings was made in a bid to make children understand that “learning is not a competition.”

“I know that ‘coming in first or second’, in class or level, has traditionally been a proud recognition of a student’s achievement,” Ong said in the report. “But removing these indicators is for a good reason, so that the child understands from young that learning is not a competition, but a self-discipline they need to master for life.”

MOE also announced that examinations for Primary 1 and 2 students will be removed, the report said. Because grades and marks will no longer be available in the report cards, schools will use “qualitative descriptors” for students in the two levels instead to help students track their progress. Meanwhile, the grades of students from Primary 3 to Secondary 5 will be rounded off to a whole number.

‘बच्चों का खाना’ बनाम ‘बड़ों का खाना’

जब मैंने २०१३ में ज्ञानकृति की स्थापना की थी उस समय यह कल्पना भी नहीं की थी कि पालकों के साथ मुझे साल में कई बार बच्चों के खाने (या नहीं खाने) के बारे में ईमेल या व्यक्तिगत मुलाकात करनी पड़ेगी प्रायः वास्तविकता आपकी कल्पना को तितर-बितर कर देते है। अपने बचपन में दूसरों का टिफ़िन चोरी करके खाने की तो खूब किस्से-कहानियाँ सुनी थी पर अचानक इस पीढ़ी को क्या हो गया विधाता? क्या ब्रम्हा ने आजकल के बच्चे किसी “manufacturing defect” के साथ बनाना चालू कर दिए है? विषय तो बहुत चिंतनीय है, इसलिए ‘बच्चो को आसानी से खाना खिलाने’ की इस श्रंखला की यह पहली कड़ी है…

आपके बच्चे को क्या खाना सबसे अधिक पसंद है? आँख बंद करके सोचिये…

क्या आपके दिमाग में हॉट डॉग, मैक्रोनी, चीज़ पिज़्ज़ा, बर्गर, मैगी जैसी तस्वीरें आई? कुछ लोग इस तरह के खाने को “बच्चों का खाना” भी बोलते है। अब तो आपको यह ब्लॉग और भी ध्यान से पढ़ना चाहिए।

बच्चों को इस तरह का खाना अधिक मात्रा में खाने के लिए कोई पौष्टिक कारण है क्या? या कोई कारण है कि बच्चे लौकी जैसे “बड़ों का खाना” नहीं खाये? संभव है कि आपने कभी “बड़ों का खाना” जैसा कुछ होता है यह न सुना हो, पर आपके बच्चे मन ही मन ऐसा निश्चितरूप से सोचते है। मैंने कुछ बच्चों को यह बोलते हुए भी सुना है कि “जब में बड़ा हो जाऊँगा तब मैं xyz सब्जी खाऊँगा।”

मेरी समझ के अनुसार अधिकतर बच्चे निम्नलिखित खाद्य पदार्थों के लिए कभी मना नहीं करेंगे

  • किसी भी तरह का जंक फ़ूड, जो एक डब्बे में बंद होकर आता हो
  • चॉकलेट युक्त खाद्य जैसे chocos आदि
  • केक, आइस-क्रीम के नाम पर कुछ भी

हर जन्मदिन पार्टी के बाद बच्चे यह सब खाकर आते है और पूरे स्कूल में सबको बड़ी शान के साथ बता रहे होते है आजकल बाहर खाने जाओ तो मेनू में “Kids Menu” अलग से दिए होते है, उनमे बच्चों के खाने के नाम पर यही सब कचरा (junk) परोसा जाता है

यह सिद्धांत कि बच्चों का खाना अलग होता है और बड़ों का खाना अलग, यही हमारे बच्चों को बिगाड़ रहा है।

पालकों को क्या करना चाहिये?

  • पसंद-नापसंद तो सबकी होती ही है, किन्तु खाने को लेकर घर को अलग-अलग टीम में ना बाँट दे
  • बच्चों को वही खाने के लिए प्रेरित करें जो आप खाते है (अगर आप भी ‘बच्चों वाला खाना’ ज्यादा पसंद करते है तो सुधार की शुरुआत स्वयं से करें)
  • ‘स्वाद’ के स्थान पर ‘पौष्टिक’ भोजन के बारे में बार-बार बच्चों को बताये
  • “बच्चों को तो यही सब पसंद है” आदि कहना बंद करें
  • “कभी-कभी चलता है” से काम नहीं चलेगा, हर दिन और हर परिस्थिति में पौष्टिक खाने की आदत डालनी होगी
  • डॉक्टर, शिक्षक (सर, मैडम) के नाम पर डराकर भी आदत सुधारने की कोशिश व्यर्थ ही जाएगी, बच्चा आपका है और कायदे से उसे आपकी बात सुनकर मानने में कोई परेशानी नहीं होनी चाहिए बच्चा अगर आपकी बात नहीं मानता तो पहले आप ‘बात मनवाने के तरीके’ सीखें (Hint: Circle Time 5:00 onwards in this video )
  • अंतिम और सबसे महत्त्वपूर्ण उपदेश – बच्चे आपने आसपास के लोगो का ही प्रतिबिम्ब होते है स्कूल के शिक्षक, माता-पिता, दादा-दादी, नाना-नानी, भाई-बहन सबको आदर्श बनकर दिखाना होगा

Learning Basics of Coding – Junior School

Grade 1 students were exposed to computer coding with the help of a game. The students were supposed to act like a robot which follows does a particular task whenever some command is typed in the system. The lesson plan and photographs of the activity are given here for details:

  • Understanding how robotic instructions are given
    • Ask children to use instructions for routine works like – go ten steps in forward direction, take a left turn, e.t.c
    • Make syntax for each instruction

Summary of answer: Interest of young children change with time. It is better for wait atleast age of 7-8 years before children start any formal training. Avoid time pass activity classes – risk of bad influence. Avoid team games, younger children are more likely to show more interest in individual sports.


Question 2: How did you decide about the theme of this year’s annual function? What inspired you? – Navita Katariya

Summary of answer: We focus on developing nationalistic and patriotic feeling among students, they should know about each and every part of India. ‘Indic languages’ was an easy theme to showcase India’s culture and mother of all languages – Sanskrit. The movie Baahubali inspired us for this theme as it has songs in multiple languages including the Dheevara song in Sanskrit language.


Question 3: Why didn’t you give any mementos or certificate this year in Gyankumbh? – Deepika Gokhale

Summary of answer: This year onwards we will organize Yearly Award Ceremony to distribute all the awards at once. It is scheduled at PritamLalDua Sabhagruh on 25th February 2018.


Question 4: प्रीस्कूल कक्षाओं में कोई भी पाठ्यपुस्तक नहीं है। किन्तु कक्षा १ में कई पुस्तकें हैं। क्या यह व्यवस्था बच्चों के लिये कठिनाईपूर्ण नहीं होती? – Rachana Saxena

Why there are no textbooks in your school? – Rajkumar Rathore

Summary of answer: This is not factually correct. We have notebooks in all classes, children however don’t carry them in school bags every day. Preschool students don’t have textbooks and we follow our own curriculum developed in sync with ICSE guidelines. Grade1 onwards students get textbooks for Hindi, English and Maths. They do not face any difficulty in using the textbooks, all the Grade1 students and parents can testify this.


Question 5: How children should be raised so that they could think on their own? and 2. How parents should react to children’s mistake and rude behaviour especially in public? – Gourav Gupta

Summary of answer: Quite a subjective issue. What we do at Gyankriti? Increase confidence of children by training them in Practical Life Skills. Once they become independent they can start taking small risks. Block and Montessori hour for mental development. Teacher should only support and not write exact answer on board for copying.


Please don’t make mistakes an ego or self-esteem issue. Don’t be embarrassed by behaviour of children. Frame rules in circle time, revise the rules regularly. Parents should show ideal behaviour in front of children. If the issue continues for long time check if your child has any disability or disorder.


Question 5: Why ICSE not CBSE? – Raghvi Gupta, Pushyamitra Joshi, Gagan Rathore

Summary of answer: CBSE is currently looking after over 20000 schools across India. Too many schools and reduction in quality over the years. ICSE is better at quality and provides some freedom for schools to implement their own unique ideas. It is also better in terms of language development, be it Hindi, English or third language. A recent survey of over 25000 students by NCERT concluded that ICSE is the number one board in India and its students scored much better in English, Maths and Science as compared to CBSE or any other state board.

Comments: There is mistake in video. I said ICSE instead of CBSE at some places.

Question 6: Why our syllabus or writing work is less? Why no cursive writing? – Dipty Joshi, Deepika Gokhale, Suresh Chouhan

Summary of answer: Syllabus is as per ICSE curriculum. Our focus is more on concepts and less on cramming. Similar kind of syllabus is followed at other goods schools in India. Similarly, in terms of writing work, it is at par with NCERT guidelines, they can write what they can read. The brief outline is: Nursery: Pattern Writing, Junior KG: English Alphabets, Senior KG: Hindi Alphabets and English words, Grade1: Passages in Hindi and English.

Apart from this writing has no future, all the competitive exams are held online these days. In the coming years children may be allowed to even give board exams on computers.


Question 7: Want to know about phonic sound? How to teach phonic sound to kid? And how it’s helpful for them? – Bharti Mishra

Summary of answer: The method of teaching reading by phonics, especially English, is not scientific at all. The sounds change all the time, there are more exceptions and many more rules. Children get confused by rules and they tend to decode words all the time and hence unable to enjoy reading.


Question 8: Hindi me aap Grade1 ke bachchon ko matra gyaan nhi kara rahe he tab kya bachhe hindi pad payenge theek se? – Dipty Joshi

Summary of answer: Not true. We introduce all the matras at once. Our Hindi textbook Rimjhim has all matras from first chapter itself. Vowel sounds, Nasal sounds like bindu, chandrabindu, nukhta, everything is properly taught to children. We don’t specify any particular time period of teaching a particular matra, that is why this confusion is there among parents.

Summary of answer: We don’t have any expansion plan. Want to work only in Indore and open only one school. There are also no plans for merger of Nipania and Annapurna branch. Question 11: I have heard that ICSE board is tough?

Summary of answer: Yes, we also find that the board is tougher in comparison to CBSE as it focuses more on conceptual learning instead of rote learning. But it should not be a problem if the school is developing concepts from early stage.

Understanding lunar cycles with the help of Indian Calendar

Outer Space and celestial bodies are something that fascinates everyone, including children. Many countries invest lot of time and resources in exposing children to space research. Space exploration can also serve as a stimulus for children to enter the fields of science and engineering. How should we begin with at the school level?

At Gyankriti one can notice that children write Gregorian calendar dates in English notebooks and Vikram Samvat dates in Hindi notebooks. The children are also regularly told to go to the terrace and observe the moon. There are two learning objectives associated with this

  1. Understand the phases of moon throughout the year and co-relate it with the hindu calendar. [Subject: Science]
  2. Understand the logic behind ever-changing dates of Hindu festivals. [Subject: General Knowledge]

About the Indian Calendars

One can find more details about various versions of Indian Calendar and the astronomical concepts behind them on the website of Positional Astronomical Centre of Indian Meterological Department. They also publish the national calendar of India, Rashtriya Panchang, with the objective of unifying the divergent practices of calendar systems existing in different parts of the country and also to promote panchang calculations on a modern scientific basis.

 As we are using Vikram Samvat at our school, here are some basic details of the luni-solar hindu calendar.

  • The Indian calendar is known by the Hindu word “panchanga“.
  • The calendar is based on the lunar cycle. A day is measured as the period between one moonrise and the next. A month is the period from one moon cycle to the next. A year is measured from the beginning of a season until its return.
  • A lunar month lasts 29.5 days on average.
  • A lunar year lasts 12 lunar months or 354 solar days.

Since a period of twelve lunar months fall short of a solar year by 11 days, an additional month is added to the calendar at three-yearly intervals. This month is known as the “adhika“. Each month is divided into the two cycles (waxing and waning) of the moon (new moon to full moon and back). The period of the new moon is called “krishna paksha” and the period of the full moon is called “shukl paksha“.

Which calendar should we follow at our school?

The Indian Calendar Reform Committee, appointed in 1952, identified more than thirty well-developed calendars, in use across different parts of India. There are two main calendars. In North India, the month generally begins with the full moon, in South India with the new moon. Festival days will still fall on the same day, or very closely, but the name of the month may be different. For example, Krishna’s Birthday falls on the eighth day of the dark moon; in the North this is in the month of Bhadra; in the South in Shravana.

Well that’s a bit complicated to begin with. Choosing the ‘perfect calendar’ for our school was very confusing. In the end it didn’t really matter which calendar we follow, as our main objective is learning its co-relation with lunar cycles. That is why we decided to go with Vikram Samvat which was started by King Vikramaditya of Ujjain in 57BC, that is 57 years before Gregorian calendar. Vikram Samvat is the most popular version in Madhya Pradesh and hence all the festivals in our region rely on its dates. For finding out the correct tithi everyday we refer the dates published in the local daily Dainik Bhaskar.

So you can use the most popular Indian calendar of your region and pick the dates from any newspaper of your area.

Grade wise learning outcomes related to space exploration

We have introduced Grade1 in this academic session and it is the senior most class at our school. That is why the curriculum outlined here is just an extrapolation of what we have been doing recently. Depending on our experiences the actual content might change over the years.


  • Learn the names of days in a week (Somvaar, Mangalvaar, …)
  • Understand the concept of day and night with the help of globe

Grade1 & Grade 2:

  • Learn names of months in the Indian Calendar.
  • Read the date from school calendar and write in Hindi notebooks everyday.
  • Understand the tithi and paksh
  • Observe the moon regularly at home
  • Co-relate the tithi and paksh of a day with the phase of moon on that night.
  • Learn names of planets in our solar system and their relative position to each other

Grade 3 onwards:

  • Understand the dates of major Indian festivals and link them to the phase of moon [For eg. Krishna Janmasthami falls always on the Krishna Paksha Asthami of Shravan month in Vikram Samvat era]
  • Observe timings of moon-rise and moon-set everday
  • Rotation of Moon around the Earth and Moon-Earth around the Sun. Making working models and relating it with the calendar.
  • Any other astronomical facts related to calendar.

CV Raman Week – Science Activities

Junior School students celebrated Sir Chandra Shekhar Raman’s birthday by organizing various fun and learn science activities. They also visited Sirpur Lake, Indore for bird-watching and observing various plants over there. The highlights of the entire week are as follows:

Visit to Sirpur Lake: Students formed 4 groups and walked about 2 KMs each in different paths along the lakeside to observe plants, birds and animals in that area. They noted down their observations and collected leafs, flowers, fruits etc. during the walk. At the end all the groups shared their observations with each other.
